Will Obama ruling awaken a sleeping Catholic giant?
Manchester’s Bishop Peter Libasci blasted the Obama administrations decision to mandate that virtually all employers offer health coverage that includes “sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception” in a letter to the state’s 280,000-plus Roman Catholics on Sunday. The letter was inserted into Church bulletins throughout New Hampshire.
The Bishop said the rule will require Catholic employers, such as New Hampshire Catholic Charities, Catholic Medical Center, and Saint Anselm College, to either violate their consciences or break the law and face penalties.
Bishop Libasci said the ruling “strikes at the fundamental right to religious liberty for all citizens of any faith. The federal government, which claims to be ‘of, by, and for the people,’ has just dealt a heavy blow to almost a quarter of those people – the Catholic population – and to the millions more who are served by the Catholic faithful.”
The Bishop asks Catholics, and others offended by the Obama administration’s actions, to learn more about “this severe assault on our religious liberty” and to contact Congress by visiting the Bishops’ website and voicing support for legislation that would reverse the administration’s decision.
Certainly, Americans of all faiths, even none, can rally in support of our First Amendment rights.
