DEVELOPING: Republican sources are telling NH Journal that Granite State businessman and former U.S. Senate candidate Bill Binnie is seriously considering a run for governor.
Reports from individuals familiar with behind-the-scenes conversations indicate that Binnie has been approached by local Republican leaders about taking on Gov. Maggie Hassan, who does not yet have a serious GOP challenger, and is favorably inclined toward entering the race. Sources say Binnie does not plan to make an immediate decision but is likely to commission a poll in the very near future.
Other Republicans rumored to be considering entering the race are conservative activist Andrew Hemingway, state Sen. Jeb Bradley and entrepreneur Chuck Rolecek. Binnie could hold a significant financial advantage over other candidates given his ability to self-fund – he poured over $5 million into his 2010 Senate primary effort – but would likely face scrutiny from conservative Republicans given his controversial stances on social issues.
