Smith gets key endorsement from Gun Owners of America

CONCORD – Former Sen. Bob Smith received perhaps the most important endorsement of his campaign for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination Tuesday.

The Gun Owners of America Political Victory Fund called Smith “the embodiment of pro-gun action” during his years in the Senate from 1991 through 2002.

GOA vice chairman Tim Macy wrote that if Smith had been in the Senate national concealed reciprocity would have passed into law.

Smith is viewed as a underdog to former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown in the GOP nomination battle, which will be settled by the voters on Sept. 9. But the GOA endorsement, if parlayed into grassroots action, gives Smith a bit of momentum with two weeks to go in the primary campaign.

In a statement, Macy said, “We believe the New Hampshire U.S. Senate race is imminently winnable. We saw with former Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli how dishonest leftist polls are used to try to destroy conservative campaigns.

“We cannot let that happen with Bob Smith. We cannot spend the next decade wondering why no GOP senator will stand up to the anti-gun juggernaut.”

Macy noted Smith has also been endorsed by the National Vietnam and Gulf War Veterans Coalition and the Strike Force PAC.

“The tide is turning and NH voters are opening up their eyes to the tired talking points of the other candidates,” Macy said. “They are looking for honesty and experience and knowledge of the issues. They are looking for someone who will stand up to the establishment on behalf of the people and I am that candidate.”
