The rumors that former BAE Systems president and CEO and retired Marine Walter Havenstein is considering a run for the GOP gubernatorial nomination can be a little closer to confirmed today as NH Journal has learned Havenstein has brought on board veteran Republican operative Jamie Burnett to advise him.
Bunett, of Profile Strategies, has advised Republican luminaries such as former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Sen. John E. Sununu.
Havenstein would be a dream candidate for some Republicans. He’s wealthy, he has a great business background and Republicans tend to admire armed services men and women. Some in the GOP’s liberty wing remain behind the campaign of Andrew Hemingway, though.
“Exactly who would Walter Havenstein represent?” Conservative blogger Steve MacDonald said to the Laconia Daily Sun. “I am going to have to go with the . . . government-first wing of the GOP for the time being.”
