NHGOP chicken arrested for disorderly clucking, flapping; claims innocence

CONCORD — The NHGOP chicken, which followed Sen. Jeanne Shaheen imploring her to hold town hall meetings, was arrested Saturday for allegedly harassing the Senator and Gov. Maggie Hassan in Londonderry.

According to wire reports, Michael Zona faces a Sept. 8 court date on a charge of disorderly conduct following an incident at the Londonderry Old Home Day parade.

Londonderry Police told WMUR-TV that Zona of Manchester was wearing the chicken suit – which had received national coverage in recent days — and  was aggressively clucking and flapping his wings at the two officeholders.

Police say they told Zona several times to stop before he was arrested.

Republicans have been been trying to make an issue over what they view as Shaheen being “chicken” to hold town hall meetings.
Zona said in a statement:

“I believe Senator Jeanne Shaheen should be holding town halls and I have a First Amendment right to express that point of view. I wasn’t bothering anyone. I wasn’t disturbing anyone. In fact, I got a good deal of encouragement from people along the parade route.”
