NH GOPer, Iraq War vet featured in pro-gay marriage ad

The Respect for Marriage Coalition launched on Friday a new national television advertisement featuring New Hampshire Republican and former Iraq War veteran Craig Stowell discussing his personal evolution on marriage equality.

In the new spot, Stowell, who served in Iraq as a Marine corporal, says freedom is the principle for which he fought abroad and the undercurrent of his belief as a Republican.

“As Americans, we believe in freedom and equal treatment,” Stowell says in the ad, which the coalition said has begun airing nationally on cable networks. “That’s what I fought for as a Marine, and that’s what we believe as Republicans. But freedom means freedom for everyone.”

Stowell said he was not always a supporter of gay marriage, but became one after he learned his brother was gay.

“I didn’t use to understand the importance of same-sex marriage, but after learning my brother was gay I wanted the same rights for him,” he says. “He was the best man at my wedding and I want to be the best man at his.”
