By LOU D’ALLESANDRO
I’ve known Jeanne Shaheen for more than 30 years. There are few more dedicated public servants than her. She has served the people of New Hampshire with honor and integrity.
We come from similar backgrounds, both having been high school teachers before entering public service, and education has remained a priority for both of us.
As a State Senator, I worked with Jeanne Shaheen when, as Governor, she fought to make a college education more affordable for New Hampshire students by establishing a tax-free college tuition savings plan. Now in the United States Senate, she continues those efforts.
Senator Shaheen knows we must do more in order to make post-secondary education a possibility for all who wish to attend. Along those lines, she has consistently backed legislation to help keep student loan interest rates low and supported reforms that reward public service with loan forgiveness.
As the cost of attending college continues to escalate, so too does the amount of debt with which students now graduate. In an effort to help alleviate some of that burden, she has introduced legislation that will allow borrowers to refinance student loan debt at lower interest rates.
Senator Shaheen has brought the same leadership skills she was known for as Governor to the United States Senate. She successfully advocated for the creation of the Manchester Job Corp Center, which will be of great benefit to my constituents and many other New Hampshire students.
She knows the people of New Hampshire and New Hampshire knows Jeanne Shaheen. The record is clear. New Hampshire residents know they can trust Jeanne Shaheen to do the right thing for New Hampshire. That’s why they elected her to three terms as Governor and then to the United States Senate.
What it all comes down to for me is that I know I can count on Jeanne Shaheen. She has always been willing to work collaboratively with me and others. She listens, she cares and she works hard to find solutions. That’s what you want in a public servant. That’s why I’m supporting Jeanne Shaheen for re-election to the United States Senate and I urge people to do the same.
