League of Conservation Voters readies big TV ad buy to attack Scott Brown

CONCORD – The League of Conservation Voters next week will launch its second television advertising campaign of the 2014 cycle against Republican U.S. Senate candidate Scott Brown.



The New Hampshire Journal has learned that the League has scheduled $369,000 in television advertising on WMUR , WBIN and cable television to attack Brown as a tool of “Big Oil” and the Koch Brothers, the co-founders of the conservative advocacy group Americans for Prosperity.



The ad is scheduled to run from July 8 through 21. About two-thirds of the budget is for the broadcast stations and one-third is for cable.


The League advertised against Brown to the tune of about $220,000 early in the year, before he was an official candidate for the U.S. Senate. That ad hit him for opposing an end to federal subsidies for major oil companies.


Sen. Jeanne Shaheen has long been a favorite of the LCV.


Colin Reed, Brown’s campaign manager, said, “It’s clear that Senator Shaheen’s allies at the League of Conservation Voters are trying to give her cover on the gas tax, which went into effect this week in New Hampshire.” A state-enacted gas tax hike of 4 cents-a-gallon went into effect on July 1.


Shaheen in early June expressed support for a hike in the federal gas tax, according to a Portsmouth Herald report. But this week said she did not support such a hike.
