New Hampshire House Speaker William O’Brien, other Republican leaders and Manchester Bishop Peter Labasci pounded the Obama administration on Monday during a press conference unveiling a new resolution condemning “ObamaCare” and a new rule requiring the Catholic Church to provide free contraception to employees of its affiliates.
“The issue we face today is the horribly ill-advised policy to force the Catholic Church to buy insurance coverage for services that contradict its teachings, but the problem is the disastrous law that led to this policy,” said Speaker O’Brien.
“I humbly ask that in the land of the free we be allowed to be free,” said Bishop Labasci. “And on those issues where we stand as religious people, that our conscience – that our responsibility – is about to be followed in this most important way.”
“It’s a shame that the Bishop need to take important time away from the dioceses to defend doctrines of the Catholic faith from this unprovoked attack by the Obama administration,” said House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt during his remarks. “But we are proud to stand united in defense of the First Amendment and New Hampshire’s long and proud history of religious tolerance.”
“Sending this message now is critical, because this incident is just the first of what will undoubtedly be many cases of new regulations that will stifle competition, interfere with long standing state policies and potentially run afoul with our religious freedoms,” the Speaker added.
