Hassan rolls the dice on a gambling tax in ‘Maggie’s Tax of the Day’ #62
With five days remaining before New Hampshire voters choose their next governor, Ovide Lamontagne’s campaign is going ‘all-in’ when it comes to spotlighting the tax increases that defined Maggie Hassan’s legislative career.
Today’s entry in their ongoing ‘Maggie’s Tax of the Day’ series spotlights a 10% tax on gambling winnings that Hassan supported.
“Maggie Hassan spent her legislative career gambling with New Hampshire taxpayers’ money, so it’s ironic yet not surprising that she voted to tax her fellow gamblers,” reads this morning’s press release. “The tax applies to all money won within the state – by residents and nonresidents alike – and even extended to New Hampshire residents winnings from out-of-state – so much for that relaxing vacation.”
An $300,000 increase in state spending ran parallel with the tax, as a supposed means of collection, “even though the law places the burden of reporting and record keeping on the taxpayer.”
