CONCORD — New Hampshire’s three Democratic Capitol Hill incumbents will receive support in their reelection bids from a pro-gun control group headed by 2011 shooting victim former Arizona U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly.
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Reps. Carol Shea-Porter and Ann Kuster are among more than a dozen candidates nationwide who will receive help from Americans for Responsible Solutions.
The group has raised about $14.5 million since it was founded in January 2013 and plans to spend money on television advertising and direct mail to help the list of mostly incumbent candidates.
ARS executive director Pia Carusone, former communications director of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, told the New Hampshire Journal the group started up 15 months ago, which provided enough time to take a close look at the races nationally.
“We really don’t have a specific plan for any of the races quite yet but I would expect that in New Hampshire, you will see a mix of advertising and local events. You might see us with local gun owners and other allies to support these candidates.”
She noted that of all the states, “We are the most invested in New Hampshire. We will be involved in two congressional races and the U.S. Senate race.”
She noted that all three incumbent Democrats supported federal legislation calling for universal background checks. Shaheen backed the Manchin-Toomey bill while Shea-Porter ans Kuster backed the companion King-Thompson bill.
“It is important that these champions of common sense, who have shown political courage, return to Congress to represent their constituents,” Carusone said.
