Former Hewlett-Packard CEO and GOP grassroots organizer Carly Fiorina has signed on as the second speaker confirmed for the state Republican Party’s “First-in-the-Nation Leadership Summit on April 17 and 18.
Fiorina will have a choice speaking spot – at lunch on the second day of the event, April 18.
Businesswoman Carly Fiorina
Fiorina is viewed as a potentially serious contender in the wide open New Hampshire primary despite having less name recognition at the moment than some of the others who are expected to run. She was in the state several times during the midterm elections in her role as founder and chair of the Unlocking Potential PAC, which sought to organize and rally conservative women to actively support Republicans. She is the only woman in the GOP field but has made it clear she wants no part of “identity politics.”
She returned to the state in December, and then again just last week to speak to a “Politics and Eggs” breakfast. She is also scheduled to return on March 7 to speak to the New Hampshire Young Republicans “Gipper Awards” breakfast.
Fiorina becomes the second potential presidential candidate to be confirmed for the GOP summit. The NHGOP announced on Tuesday that Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was the first potential candidate to confirm an appearance at the event, which will be held at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Nashua. He will also speak on April 18.
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal
Jindal last appeared in the state in late September to campaign for state GOP candidates and to speak at an American Renewal Project” Pastors and Pews” event in Nashua. He also made an early September visit to the state, with several speaking appearances.
Others confirmations for the summit are expected to follow soon.
If the first-in-the-nation primary campaign hasn’t officially kicked off by April 17, it will when the summit gets underway. It will be two days of speechmaking, panel discussions but behind the scenes, candidates, their strategists and operatives will be working what is expected to be a huge crowd, trying to win supporters. It will also be a media frenzy, with national and even international news outlets expected to cover the event.
Most likely candidates who appear at the summit will piggyback other appearance in the state with the event, making for a wild weekend of politicking in New Hampshire.
Fiorina said: “I’m looking forward to returning to New Hampshire for the Republican Leadership Summit to talk about renewing America’s potential.”
NHGOP chair Jennifer Horn said, “Carly Fiorina is an accomplished business leader who understands how to create jobs and grow our economy. New Hampshire Republicans look forward to hearing more about her plans to get our country back on track at the Leadership Summit.”
Horn also said, “We pleased to have Governor Bobby Jindal as our first announced featured speaker for the First in the Nation Republican Leadership Summit. Governor Jindal’s participation in this important event underscores his commitment to New Hampshire and the important role that our state plays in selecting our nominee. We look forward to announcing more speakers in the near future.”
