The NH GOP’s financial woes are on tap for discussion on Wednesday as former-U.S. Senate candidate Bill Binnie has summoned state Republican leaders to an “off the record briefing regarding the current financial situation of the New Hampshire Republican State Committee.”
Binnie, who was appointed finance chairman of the party by Chairman Jack Kimball and approved by the executive committee, says he will give a complete assessment of the financial condition of the state party at the meeting, according to an e-mail obtained by NH Journal.
The tone of Binnie’s e-mail appears to indicate that the party’s financial position is serious and that he plans to ask Republican officials to fund party activity.
The e-mail appears to have gone out to state Republican leaders, including members of the federal delegation and leaders of the Republican majorities in the legislature.
As NH Journal first reported, the Republican State Committee under Kimball has run into serious financial difficulties. As of his last reporting to the Federal Elections Commission, Kimball had only $1,300 in the bank available to pay staff and overhead.
Kimball has acknowledged there is a coup attempt afoot to oust him as Chairman and Foster’s Daily Democrat, a prominent Republican paper, has editorialized that former Chairman John H. Sununu or former Cheshire County Chairman Juliana Bergeron should take over the Committee.
Some Republicans expressed irritation at Binnie’s summoning.
“I never heard of this guy until he started running negative ads against Republicans last year,” one said. “And now he’s calling people in for a meeting?”
Others were amused that Kimball appears to be counting on Binnie, a successful businessman, to bail out the State Committee. Kimball is a tea partier while Binnie is a moderate who supports abortion rights, gay marriage, a federal VAT tax, and opposed strict immigration reforms.
“Kimball has spent most of his time in public life accusing the rest of us of being RINOs,” said one prominent Republican. “Then he brings in the ultimate RINO to clean up his mess. Talk about irony.”
