Barton email attacks NHYR chair opponent Molly Sanborn as “new mother”
An email released by New Hampshire Young Republican Chairman candidate Joseph Barton this week takes shots at his opponent, former State Representative Molly Sanborn. In the email, dated April 17th – two days after the Boston Marathon bombings – Barton writes:
“Sometimes it is difficult to separate those involved in politics for policy from those who are in it for power…I am very said [sic] to report that this race has gone from promoting core conservative principles to a power struggle for a seat on the NHGOP e-board.”
Barton’s email makes multiple references to Sanborn’s gender in his message, which includes a candid photograph of a pregnant Sanborn, who recently gave birth to her first child:
“I expect sometime this evening that new mother and State Representative Molly Sanborn of Hooksett will announce her candidacy for chair under the guise that we ‘need more women’ in the party.”
“I apologize for not being able to control my gender; but firmly believe that men and women can serve the party’s values equally; and that there is no place for gender politics in the Republican Party…one’s particular body parts have no bearing or relevance on the issue.”
Barton’s email was sent the day after Republican State Rep. Peter Hansen came under fire from both sides of the aisle for referring to women as “vaginas” in an email to his fellow legislators.
Sanborn announced her candidacy that same day and did not refer to a need for more women in the party in her announcement.
The election will take place at the NHYR convention on Saturday, April 20th.
