“We’re the duo that the mainstream media wants to separate at all costs,” says Andrew Breitbart, referring to him and his partner in their exciting new breed of investigative journalism, James O’Keefe. And he’s likely correct; Breitbart, O’Keefe, or a combination thereof have been at the forefront of exposing corruption within leftist groups like ACORN and Planned Parenthood, and first publishing the now-infamous Anthony Weiner Twitter photo.
Breitbart and O’Keefe are taking their act on the road this weekend, headlining an even with the New Hampshire chapter of Americans for Prosperity entitled ‘The Rise and Fall of Traditional Media.’
“I think that both [O’Keefe] and I come from a ‘Live Free or Die’ mentality, so I think there’s no better symbolic venue than New Hampshire,” says Breitbart.
During his event, Breitbart will highlight the decline of outdated mainstream media outlets like newspapers, magazines, and traditional-style televised news. Explaining why he believes this change from old to new media is taking place, he notes that the way we consume the news has changed. “The news consumer or news reader is a de facto media critic,” he says, going on to state that the problem is greatly magnified by what he considers an antagonistic attitude on the part of media elites toward their readership or viewership.
Breitbart does credit some of the newer generation of traditional media operators with imitating the more transparent, ideologically honest aspects of new media. In fact, he believes that newer liberal commentators like Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann are far “less dangerous” that old-school news anchors like Dan Rather and Walter Cronkite, who subtly inserted their liberal bias under the guise of reporting the news.
When we asked a question about what one policy he would change if he was President for a day, Breitbart is quick to assert that he views himself as a cultural, not a political, figure. When pressed, he admits that he would get rid of Obamacare, “just because it would piss people off so much.”
In the past several years, Breitbart has developed an ever-expanding network of sites devoted to transparent reporting on a variety of topics, including Big Government (politics & government), Big Peace (international affairs), and Big Hollywood (film & entertainment). So what’s next for the Breitbart new media empire?
“I’m going to be doing something that I’ve never done before, and that is to launch Breitbart.com as a portal,” he says, “There’s going to be one point of entry and Breitbart.com is going to be restructured with technological advancement that allows for there to be more of a community feel to it and more of a one-stop-shop.”
Breitbart says the launch of his new portal isn’t far away: “Going into the next election cycle and hopefully by the New Hampshire Primary there will be a completely different vibe and experience to the site.”
