In the wake of the fallout from her vote against the Manchin-Toomey gun bill, a prominent outside group is coming to the defense of New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte.
Yesterday American Future Fund launched a $250,000 ad buy defending the freshman senator, calling “those commercials from out-of-state groups…flat-out wrong.” The scope of the buy will also include online ads, and Politico’s report stated that the sum was expected to increase “in the coming weeks.”
The ad defends Ayotte by touting her vote in favor of another measure that the ad says worked towards “fixing background checks and strengthening mental health screenings.”
Multiple groups, including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns, have launched ads attacking Ayotte’s vote against the Manchin-Toomey legislation, which fell short of the 60 votes needed. Mainstream media pushed a narrative of backlash within the Granite State, but NH Journal documented the botched coverage surrounding Ayotte’s townhall meetings, one of which saw an attendee call the senator “presidential,” sparking tremendous applause.
